Manny Fried

I just learned of the death this morning of my first and favorite writing teacher, Manny Fried. This is a linke to an article on him that’s a few years old:  http://artvoice.com/issues/v5n36/renaissance_manny

He taught writing at Buffalo State College and for 30 years, he was the only writing teacher I’d had. He was the first person I heard referred to creative writing as a “craft.”

There are a lot of things I could say about him, but the first things that come to mind are that he was approachable and he loved writing enough to want to help other people ‘learn their craft’.

My favorite saying about writing came from Dr. Fried: “The hardest part of writing is applying the seat of your pants to the seat of your chair.”
